MODULE 1
Lavandula (lavender) in the family lamiaceae.
Lavender has been used extensively in aromatherapy for thousands of years. It is used in candals, essential oils, and mixtures. Commonly, I've seen the essential oil, flower buds, and bunches of leaves sold. It helps with relaxations, sleep, and is generally one of my favorite smells. I have a small mesh bag in my car that has a mixture of lavender and other sweet smelling herbs. When my car gets hot, the smell is released and it provides a relaxing driving experience. In cooking, lavender is not very commonly used. I once had honey-lavender ice cream, and it was very delicious. Some people smoke it as an herbal alternative to smoking tobacco. |
Here, I have my sage plant. It is also part of the lamiaceae family.
Like lavender,
it is used in aromatherapy.
It is used more frequently in cooking than lavender. It is frequently used with
savory foods such as potatoes or flavoring meats.
The essential oil contains cineole, borneol, and thujone. Sage leaf contains
tannic acid, oleic acid, ursonic acid, carnosol, carnosic acid, fumaric acid,
chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, niacin, nicotinamide, flavones, flavonoid glycosides,
and estrogenic substances. ("Sage". OBeWise Nutriceutica. Applied Health.

There are also studies where sage has eliminated free radicals in people's
digestive systems.
Sage leaves are wrapped in a bundle and dried and burned in some holy practices.

This final plant is the newest one to me. Its common name is longevity spinach or leaves of gods.
The scientific name is Gynura procumbens.
It is in the Asteraceae family
It is native to China, Southeast Asia, and Africa. It grows as a vine and the leaves and vine are the medicinal parts of the plant.
It can be used as an anti-inflammatory and it treats rheumatism and viral infections. The biggest health benefit, however, is its claim to drastically decrease hypertension and in some cases, it has cured type 2 diabetes.
Medicine claims that eating two leaves per day will cure a deathly high blood pressure in a month.
I plan on giving it to my dad, who has hypertension, and seeing if it works!
